Hi, I am a single, graduate student who is finishing up her doctoral dissertation on the subject of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and sexual satisfaction. Sex, particularly female sexuality, is something that has always fascinated me since I was 14 and read my first book on the subject: The Hite Report. Boy, was that an eye opener, prior to that book I had never heard the word clitoris. I had my first orgasm through masturbation within days of reading her book. Thank you, Shere Hite!
In spite of my highly orgasmic, solo sex life, I didn’t find partner sex to be all that earth shaking. Like many women, I have found it difficult to translate my solo experiences into partner sex. As I grew older and learned more about female sexuality, both through reading and talking with women, I realized that my experience wasn’t unique.
A study on sexual dysfunction published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that as many as 43% of women experience some form of the condition. This statistic has come under fire because the researchers didn’t ask their female participants if they thought they had any sexual problems. They just wrote them up as having a dysfunction if a woman listed one or more sexual symptoms in a year. However, it is clear that a lot of women are not really satisfied with their sexual lives.
I am very passionate about this issue. And I believe that it is frequently looked at from the wrong perspective. I hope my blog will contribute to greater understanding.
